First dental visit

Luke got some special treatment when we went to visit Daddy for lunch. Of course he has in-house dental care at home, but he was due for a real polishing.

Dad showed him the handpiece and prophy paste and he was interested in the "special toothpaste."
Suddenly he didn't want Daddy to do it! Believe it or not, he requested Mommy! (this is not a common occurrence for tasks like this. Daddy is definitely more fun most of the time).
He refused to let me wear gloves (we'll work on that next time. Membership in a dental family has its privileges.) He was a fabulous patient. As I usually work on teens and adults, I was reminded that kids are moving targets in the chair! Those of you who are dental types viewing this picture would say "Nice ergonomics--NOT!"

A chip off the old blocks.

Should I be taking P to see the dentist? When do they start going?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends the first dental visit at one year of age (their new campaign calls it a "Dental Home"). A lot of parents don't see the point, but it can do a lot of good to catch things early, and I think it's probably a really good idea.

Great post.

I can't believe how big and grown up he looks in that chair.
