Here is what we did: we removed part of a wall so that the kitchen is more open to the family room. We tore everything out to the studs (I am not missing my 1967 oven, though both the old and the new were GE. Maybe I should have gotten a brand loyalty discount?). Then we put it all back together again, with Michael as general contractor! We also took the opportunity to put hand scraped hardwoods in all the common areas (formals and family room) along with the kitchen. The basic floorplan was good, so we made just a few minor changes in the location of appliances, etc. I know you are looking at the "before" and you are right, it wasn't THAT bad. It was the fact that we want to live here for a long time and we want to enjoy our remodel rather than remodel just to sell. We had good space and layout, but we just had really old original (1967) cabinets and drawers which operated wood on wood. The removal of the furdowns really updates it also, don't you think?
We are very excited about our new kitchen! I cooked dinner tonight and it was so fun!
I may be switching out these photos for daytime photos, but I was too excited to wait! With the flash it's kind of hard to see the colors well. I promise it looks so cool!
