I'm on my soapbox, sorry

I saw a child on the light rail on Monday who appeared to be at least two years old. He was drinking COCA-COLA out of a BOTTLE! GASP! I was with another friend who is in the dental field, and we exchanged a knowing glance and rolled our eyes. My first reaction was to be angry at the mom. The more I think about it, though, I just feel really sorry for the child. He is almost guaranteed a case of early childhood caries. His mother probably does not have a very high level of education and is doing the best she can. She loves her child but lacks information.

Now, this may sound wacky, but listen people: juice is not a good thing for the teeth either! Juice is almost as bad as the Coke. Yes, it has some vitamins, but most kids love fruit and Vitamin C is an easy one to get into their diet otherwise. Kids who drink a lot of juice will also tend to gain extra weight. Children will gladly drink their calories (wait. . .so will most adults in America). Water is a wonderful beverage and if you just give your child milk and water, they will be developing good habits for life.

Sorry for sounding off. I'm not a physician but I am a dentist. Luke's pediatrician agrees--no juice! When he told me that, I knew we had made a love match!

You speak with great command, sista. Preach on! Pray for us while we're in Florida. I'm leaving today, and we'll all be back next Saturday. I'm still feeling a little under the weather...

Hopefully it was Diet Coke.

Just kidding;)

I totally agree with the juice and cola recommendations! People sometimes encourage me to give Kiley juice, and I think, why? She loves water - why would I want to get her hooked on sweet, sugary beverages? Thanks for reinforcing my resolve!

I'm still addicted to Diet Coke, sadly. It's so bad for you...like acid for your stomach and teeth. But I love it so. Help me!
